Circumference

CIRCUMFERENCE

We kissed for the first time: moonlight
in the parking lot of an Italian restaurant.

On tips of toes I leaned
& pressed my chest closer to yours.

You laughed into my hair. You’re tall
enough already. I’m sure I blushed,

said nothing, conscious of my body jutting
against space, wondering just how much is too much.

What I wish I’d said was:
I didn’t stand on tips of toes because

I couldn’t reach you. I just felt
so much & so far I

had to grow
to contain it.
